ARIA

World Wide Web Consortium's (W3c) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) group has introduced the Accessible Rich Internet Application (ARIA) specification to ensure accessibility of rich internet applications for all users including people with disabilities.

CIC Online has incorporated ARIA for Lodge a complaint and Submit your Appeal forms. Screen reader users can access these forms with Mozilla FireFox version 3.0 or above web browser with Non Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) 0.6p3.2 and FireVox 6.1 (a talking browser extension for FireFox) screen readers. Both these screen readers are freely available on the internet. We suggest use of the above mentioned screen readers since they include maximum ARIA support whereas other screen readers include partial ARIA support.

Note: JavaScript needs to be enabled to access forms including ARIA support.

In addition, CIC Online has also ensured users browsing without JavaScript can access the forms successfully.

NVDA users can access the forms by performing the following steps:

  1. In Mozilla FireFox, open either Lodge a Complaint or Submit your Appeal form.
  2. Move to the main content of the web page by activating the "Skip to main content" link available at the top of the web page.
  3. Press the Arrow keys to read the instructions before filling up the form.
  4. Use the Tab and Shift + Tab key to navigate through the form. As you move from one form control to another, all the information provided using ARIA will be read out automatically.
  5. Once you have filled up all the fields, activate the "Submit" or "Save as Draft" button to submit the details.

Note: NVDA switches to "Focus Mode" automatically while interacting with form controls. You can press "Insert + Spacebar" to switch to "Browse Mode" to read the textual information.

Firevox users can access the forms by performing the following steps:

  1. In FireFox with Firevox running, open either Lodge a Complaint or Submit your Appeal form.
  2. Move to the main content of the web page by activating the "Skip to main content" link provided at the top of the web page.
  3. Press Ctrl + Shift +F (move forward an element) or Ctrl + Shift + D (move to the previous element) to read the instructions before filling up the form.
  4. Use the Tab and Shift + Tab key to navigate through the form. As you move from one form control to another, all the information provided using ARIA will be read out automatically. Firevox will announce "Clue" before reading out instructional text that gets added on the form whereas it will announce "Change" before reading out the form controls that get added to the form.
Note: Firevox will read out the updated information after a short delay. It will pause for few seconds before reading out the information.
  5. Once you have filled up all the fields, activate the "Submit" or "Save as Draft" button to submit the details.
